What's the corporate version of the phrase, "the beatings will continue until morale improves?" When companies hit a rough patch, it's always the same playbook. The frontline employees, you know - the folks who actually get stuff done, get whacked. The executives who ran the ship into the iceberg? They’re rewarded with retention bonuses and first-class lifeboats. Starbucks is just the latest example. Faced with declining performance, they decided to shut down 1% of their stores and cut 900 jobs. Isn't it interesting that 10% of their unionized stores were part of that 1%? A TOTAL coincidence, I'm sure. But let’s not stop there. The same CEO orchestrating this “restructure” is the guy who previously ran Chipotle into the ground. He now enjoys an office custom-built five minutes from his house because commuting to HQ in Seattle was just too much. Meanwhile, his baristas are lucky if they can get a consistent shift schedule. Median pay at Starbucks is around $14,000. The CEO-to-employee pay ratio? Roughly 6,700 to 1. But guess what didn’t get touched in the restructuring? Executive compensation. Shocker. This isn’t just about Starbucks. It’s a pattern across corporate America: glorify hustle culture when times are good, then fire the hustlers when margins tighten. The same leaders who tell you this is a “family” are the ones who’ll ghost you when it’s time to make cuts. It’s a reminder that loyalty in corporate settings is largely a one-way street. That’s why I keep telling people: be the CEO of your own career. If you don't set boundaries, someone else will set them for you and they won’t be in your favor. You owe it to yourself to build something that can’t be taken away in a boardroom meeting. @Dr.Jim @Dr.Jim @Dr.Jim
