The AKC (American Kennel Club) recommends cropping the ears of certain breeds in order to meet an arbitrary breed standard. Many other countries, however have done research into the pros and cons of such a procedure. Australia like many other progressive countries discovered that ear cropping caused more harm than good. As a result they banned the procedure over 20yrs ago. The official stance in Australia is that ear cropping is painful and unnecessary mutilation that can cause long term physical and psychological problems. Banning cosmetic procedures like ear cropping shows demonstrates that as a country we care more about the well being of our dogs rather than meeting a "breed standard". Obviously, exceptions can be made for dogs with medical problems. It is apparently not uncommon to crop the ears of dogs with severe and chronic ear infections.
