Many evangelical churches use the title bishop, but in historic Christianity, the title alone does not make someone a bishop. A true bishop is a man who has been validly ordained by other bishops whose ordination can be traced back through an unbroken line to the Apostles. This is called apostolic succession. The earliest Christians treated this succession as necessary because it preserved both the authority and the teaching entrusted by Christ to the Apostles. St. Clement of Rome wrote around AD 96: “The Apostles… appointed their firstfruits… to be bishops and deacons… and afterwards gave instructions that when these should fall asleep, other approved men should succeed them.” — 1 Clement 42, 44 St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote around AD 107: “Where the bishop appears, there let the people be; just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” — Letter to the Smyrnaeans 8 St. Irenaeus wrote around AD 180: “We can enumerate those who were appointed bishops in the churches by the Apostles, and their successors down to our own time.” — Against Heresies 3.3.1 A minister who is simply elected, appointed, or given the title “bishop,” but who has not received episcopal ordination within apostolic succession, is not a bishop in the historic sacramental sense. He may be a sincere pastor and Christian leader, but he does not possess the episcopal office handed down from the Apostles. #catholic #orthodox #christiantiktok
