A few things that have been working well for me in this medium. Here they are… • Sealing my entire wood surface with a thin layer of clear satin polycrylic prior to applying the gold leaf. This helps provide a solid surface to apply the adhesive to. Without the polycrylic seal the wood is naturally porous & quickly absorbs the adhesive leaving me with some areas that have no tacky adhesive for my gold leaf to stick to. • Using 24 karat genuine gold leaf only because it doesn’t tarnish. That means it won’t oxidize or change colour & doesn’t require any additional sealants or finishes over the gold unless.
You want to. • I use a water-based gilding paste by Pebeo & I apply the adhesive with flexible silicone brushes. These fine point brushes aid in applying thin layers with precision. • Since I apply the gold leaf to small details throughout my artwork I find that cutting my gold leaf into smaller pieces with a gilding knife on a gilder’s cushion helps me utilize more gold leaf with less leftovers flakes. All my leftover flakes I save in a glass jar to use for future projects. • I transfer the gold leaf to the adhesive with a paint brush & once the gold is stuck on the wood.
I use a clean & super soft paint brush or makeup brush to remove the excess gold leaf from the surface to avoid scratching the wood or gold.
