Video Title / CaptionI recently got this guitar that was in pretty rough shape, and today I am going to get the neck cleaned up and prepped for some fretwork. I already got the electronics dialed in, but this thing is still pretty gross and the setup is awful. There is years of other people’s sweat and oils caked on this fingerboard, and I do not want that in my life. I took the more controversial route of softening the chud with naphtha and lightly scraping away the filth with a fresh razor blade. It is important to move slowly and use very little pressure when doing this. My goal is to not scrape away any of the wood, just the thick crust that sits on top of it. I continue this for all of the frets, using more naphtha and a rag to wipe away any residual gunk as I go.  There are many ways to clean a fingerboard, and I choose to cycle through a few that work for me. In cases where the crust gets to this point, and the guitar is my own, the time saved removing the bulk with a fresh blade and then going in with a rag or a soft bristle toothbrush is huge when I have a shop full of guitars waiting to be worked on. Aside from the fact that I do not like dirty fingerboards, the cleaning does serve a greater purpose. This chud hastens string and fret degradation and works its way into any gaps it has access to.  In this case, there were gaps between the frets and the fingerboard. You can see here how much oil and dirt get squeezed out when the frets are tapped back in with a hammer. This is also an important step in prepping for the fretwork. I want all of these frets properly seated before I start leveling, and they can’t seat properly if they are being obstructed by anything. Since these frets have already shown that they will unseat themselves, I secure them all with a little bit of CA glue to help keep them from pupping up again. I hold them down in place with a fret press. The edges of this fingerboard are also pretty rolled in, meaning that the neck doesn’t follow a perfect and a quarter radius. Luckily, my J Edwards fractal fret press is perfect for the job, allowing me to get the fret ends down securely. Now that the board is all clean and the frets are all seated, this neck is all ready to be leveled.  Let me know in the comments if you want to see that process as well as the rest of this guitar restoration and setup.  #guitar #bass #fender #gibson #stratocaster
