The tradition of this haunting body art goes back over 200 years and is rooted in both myth and survival. According to local legend, hunters were disappearing into the mountains. When warriors went searching for them, they found a cave filled with the hunters’ bones, guarded by a terrifying mountain monster. To outsmart and scare the beast, the warriors painted themselves with black and white clay to look like the dead, allowing them to escape safely. Historically, it was also a brilliant psychological tactic. In a region where people held a deep fear of spirits and the supernatural, warriors charging into battle looking like living skeletons was a guaranteed way to terrify enemy tribes! 👻 Today, the Chimbu people no longer paint themselves for war. Instead, the skeleton paint is a proud celebration of their heritage, performed at cultural festivals (Sing-sings) to honor their ancestors and keep their stories alive.
