Video Title / Caption❓What happens to old wind turbine blades? The hidden waste problem behind wind turbines. There’s a growing problem we need to talk about: what happens when turbines reach the end of their life? Wind turbine blades are longer than a football field, built tough with fiberglass and epoxy resin. That makes them nearly impossible to recycle. After about 20 years, they’re often cut into 40-foot sections and buried in special landfills — like the one in Casper, Wyoming, where over 1,000 blades have already been dumped. That landfill alone can still take in about 9,000 more. By 2050, the world is expected to generate over 43 million tons of wind blade waste — nearly three times more than New York City’s annual waste. Here’s how it breaks down: • China: 40% • Europe: 25% • U.S.: 19% • Rest of the world: 16% These “wind turbine graveyards” also exist in many other parts of the world, raising further questions about sustainability. But there’s another concern: toxic chemicals. Many turbine blades are coated with PFAS-based paints or surface treatments to increase durability and resist weathering. PFAS — known as “forever chemicals” — are highly persistent in the environment and linked to serious health risks, including cancer, liver damage, and immune system disruption. When blades are cut or shredded, these toxic coatings can release dust or microfibers that may pose occupational and environmental hazards. Some older blades have been repurposed into park benches, utility poles, or shredded for use in cement, but these solutions are extremely limited.
