Most houses are built with Pre-manufactured trusses that get installed with a crane and braces to hold them together and level. Why is stick-building often better? Sometimes it is necessary because you need the extra space in the attic or for an upstairs floor. Often times, trusses have so much webbing going everywhere that it removes usable space or makes it impossible to have an upstairs living area. Other times, you could do it either way, but a stick-built roof creates a strong roofing system. Trusses are often made with 2x4s and 2x6s whereas stick-built is most often going to use 2x8s or greater for joists and 2x6s or greater for rafters. Is there a cost difference? Sometimes. Trusses are more expensive to purchase but less to install, whereas Stick-building is the opposite. Often times it washes out or comes close to it in the overall cost of a home.
